Impact of Tourism Crisis

The tourism industry has from time to time suffered from exogenous shocks that resulted in significant drops in tourist flows, but was able to recover repeatedly. Due to its global implications and the fact that it directly affects people’s financial ability to travel, the current global economic downturn could become the most severe crisis the industry has ever seen. Decreasing demand for travel in all customer segments threatens companies’ growth perspectives considerably. Reasons include consumers’ financial inability, job uncertainty and companies’ saving measures on business travel. Moreover, countries’ economic stimulus packages do not address investments in travel. Hence, many traditional business models in all industry segments are put under pressure.

Tourism Crisis Management Plan

The tourism crisis task force should be followed by the development of the tourism crisis management plan. 'This plan should clarify crisis management's goals and objectives, present a complete hazards analysis, and provide strategies for managing the situation to achieve full tourism recovery. An effective plan of action must be clear to all those involved in its implementation and avoid unnecessary complications. The crisis management plan should be cost-effective, in other words, the cost incurred by the crisis management team must outweigh the consequences of having no crisis management.
The Hospitality and Tourism Management Association  focuses on research and training that will help tourism businesses prepare for, and recover from, nature and human induced disasters that create crises for visitor destinations. We strictly target to tourism industry professionals who wish to build skills related to crisis reduction, readiness, response, and recovery from natural and human-induced disasters that affect their destination or business.
Tourism crisis management concerns creating and developing necessary measures and plans to deal with emergency issues like cyclones, natural disasters, the spread of new infectious diseases, etc. It also involves implementing emergency response training and drills that will ensure travel industry employees know exactly what to do in the event a disaster strikes.
